What to Expect During Your First RCMS Verification Audit
Stage 1: Off-Site Document Review
Before the auditor visits your facility, they will conduct a thorough review of your RCMS documentation — your manual, procedures, policies, and key records. This first gate identifies significant documentation gaps. Invest time in ensuring your documentation is complete, current, and organized before this stage.
Stage 2: On-Site Verification
The auditor visits your headquarters and a sample of facilities. Using a plan-do-check-act methodology, they verify that your documented processes match actual operations. Expect the auditor to spend significant time on the plant floor observing operations, reviewing records, and talking to employees.
The Interview Process
Employee interviews are a critical component. Auditors will interview personnel at all levels, from senior leadership to front-line operators. They're gauging whether Responsible Care® principles are understood and embedded throughout the organization — not just in the EHS department.
Key Focus Areas
- Management leadership and commitment to Responsible Care®
- Goal setting and performance measurement
- Root cause analysis from incidents and near-misses
- Monitoring and measuring performance against EHS&S objectives
- Community outreach and stakeholder engagement
After the Audit
You'll receive a detailed verification report. Address any findings promptly and document your corrective actions thoroughly. The verification cycle typically operates on a three-year schedule.
